*The shanks should be destroyed when the second pair of gaffs wears out, or at 5 years of age.

After the equipment is inspected, take time to clean it. This prolongs the life of the equipment and enhances the appearance.

Metals and nylons can be cleaned with mild soap and water solutions. Never buff forged hardware, the heat will ruin the temper. Never use petroleum based cleaners on nylons.

Leathers are best cleaned using saddle soap (C804). Quality leather preservers such as Neatsfoot Oil (C806) and Mink Oil (C809) should be applied lightly. Let the equipment air dry overnight away from heat. Wipe off the excess oil before starting the next day. This should be done quarterly.

MAINTENANCE

Inspect all parts and look for any signs of deterioration or abuse. Remove from service if any of the following conditions are discovered.

Tool Belts (Estimated life with proper care, 5 to 8 yrs.)

A. Hardware - Electrical burns, cracks, deformation, loose attachment points.

B. Sewing - Loose, cut or frayed stitches.

C. Leather or Nylon Material - Abraded strength member, cuts, fraying, or chemical deterioration.

D. Rivets - Loose or bent rivets

E. Tool Loops - Tool Holster - Elongated loops, improper tool fit, or loose attachment points.

F. Tongue- Broken stitches, elongated holes, fraying, or worn material.

Pole Straps (Estimated life with proper care, 1 to 4 yrs.)

A. Hardware - Electrical burns, cracks, deformation, loose attachment points, improper latch movement or spring tension on the snap.

B. Leather or Nylon Material - Extreme wear, cuts, fraying, broken or loose stitches, chemical deterioration or exposed red center material. The keeper must be intact.

Climbers (Estimated life with proper care, 5 yrs or *)

A. Straps and Pads - Cuts, extreme wear, chemical deterioration, elongated buckle holes, loose attachment points.

B. Shank - thinness, cracks, electrical burns, deformation, improper top slide adjustment. Carefully inspect the critical shank section 4" to 8" above the gaff. Deep cuts, scratches, or markings in this area may create points of stress which could cause breakage.

C. Gaffs - Loose attachment, electrical burns, improper shape - use a Bashlin gaff gauge.
